VOIP In Education

What is VOIP?
VOIP (Voice over internet protocol) is a method for taking analog audio signal, like the kind you hear when you talk on the phone, and turning them into digital signals that can be transmitted over the Internet. VOIP is very useful as it can turn a standard internet connection into a way to place free phone calls. By using VOIP people are bypassing the phone company and its charges entirely.

The type of VOIP we will be talking here is Computer-to-Computer VOIP. This is certainly the easiest way to use VOIP. You don't even have to pay for long-distance calls. There are several companies offering free or very low-cost software that you can use for this type of VOIP. All you need is the software, a microphone, speakers, a sound card and an Internet connection; preferably a fast one like you would get through a cable or DSL modem. Except for your normal monthly ISP fee, there is usually no charge for computer-to-computer calls, no matter the distance.

VOIP's impact in Education
VOIP made a great impact in the field of education. A number of tutoring companies are using VOIP as a tool in their teaching. They say it’s much easier and fun to use VOIP for studies. Using VOIP allows students and teachers both to enjoy the subject and gain more interest in that subject. It is also very relaxing as students and teachers can sit at home and discuss about their topics on the net using VOIP. In this way student can get more help from the teachers with more ease.

Reason’s why VOIP is used in Education
  • Free on inexpensive voice calling: This drags students and teachers to use it.

  • Video calling: This helps teachers and students to have a video chat and help more with their understanding.

  • Text mode chat: This can be used as an alternative if students and teachers don’t have the right stuffs for voice or video chatting.

  • File sharing: This will help the students and teachers to send notes to each other in the form of PDF.

  • Application sharing: This allows students and teachers to send work in applications like Microsoft word or powerpoint.

  • Conferencing: This is like the best feature of VOIP. Teachers and all their students can have a discussion at the same time with the help of conferencing. This helps to create a environment similar to a class room where the teacher lectures and the students listens.

  • Language Translation: This helps students and teachers who are not good in English, to type in their own language and which will be translated to English at the end so that everyone understands.

  • Upfront Payment: This allows to pay for the software upfront which is a more easy and convenient way.

VOIP is so easy and fun to use that even we use VOIP in our ITGS class. We are also planning to spread this great way to communicate in the school so that everyone can communicate easily.
